Subject: New Issue of Speak
Well, it took a while but we finally published another issue of Speak. For this issue, we chose to focus on interviewing local musicians from Portland, Oregon. I think in every issue, we're going to try to have at least one local musician from now on. As much as we love other national and international bands, I think it's also important to support your local scene! To check out the music from the local musicians featured in this issue click on these links:
I just wanted to say that I'm particularly proud of this issue. Not only have we worked hard on it, but the content this time is a perfect example of what I'd hoped Speak would become. It has always been my goal as the publisher to create a publication that would not only represent a variety of view points and interests, but would also stimulate the reader's own mind about what they've read, and hopefully as a result you all would be inspired to express your own voice and submit something to Speak.
I hope the SHAC 7 article will evoke a healthy discourse on all the topics surrounding that issue! I find it all very interesting and perplexing.
I also hope you'll be able to read Gena Minnix's The Barefoot Legend. It has some fascinating stories in it about the lives of the street kids who used to live in Austin, Texas. It would be cool to see that book inspire someone in some way.
Also, I must give a shout out to one of our readers Barbie Frudakis who contacted us and asked if she could cover Warped Tour this year in New York. It was her idea and she did a fantastic job. She took so many incredible photos; it was hard to narrow them down!
Hope all of you are doing well. Contact us and let us know what's on your mind! Also, there's the Speak message board (click here) if you feel like chatting with other Speak readers.
Take Care.

Subject: Sufjan Conceptualizes the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway
Date released: May 31, 2007
"On November 1, 2 and 3rd Sufjan will be pairing orchestrated selections of both new and old material with the 25th Next Wave Festival commission/world premiere of The BQE-a symphonic and cinematic exploration of one of New York's least celebrated monuments: the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
Robert Moses' controversial 11.7-mile roadway tears through neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens with the brute force of modern urban planning, and in Stevens' hands becomes an evocation of the intersection of intimate experience and the American Dream. Merging a virtual road trip shot on film with a live band and orchestral ensemble, The BQE discovers abstract patterns and stories in the snaking traffic, potholed pavement, billboards, badly marked exits, and beautiful city views, revealing what happens when Manifest Destiny converges with urban blight."
